Policy – Storage of Dangerous Materials

It is the policy of Red House Farm Allotments Society to ensure the safety of plot holders and visitors to the sites and to uphold the terms of the lease with NTC.

The Committee of Red House Farm Allotments Society recognises its duty, as far as possible, to identify and minimise the risks of storing materials that are flammable, explosive or poisonous.

It is the duty of every member to take reasonable care for the health and safety of him or herself and of other persons who may be affected by his or her acts or omissions and to be aware of the risks of each substance stored and take the appropriate precautions.

Each member must co-operate with the Committee to ensure that Red House Farm Allotments are a safe place in which to garden.

Only materials used in the pursuit of horticulture may be stored on the site: e.g. fertilizers, herbicides,  pesticides and fuel for tools. Members should not bring items onto the plot unless they know they will serve a useful gardening purpose and know how they are going to dispose of them appropriately.

Red House Farm Allotments Society recognises that some of these are poisonous, flammable and explosive.

Control of Pesticides Regulations

(amended) (1997)

Places responsibility on anyone who uses or stores pesticides to ensure all reasonable precautions to protect the health of humans, creatures and plants, safeguard the environment and avoid the pollution of water.

All such materials stored on the site must be locked away, clearly labelled and, where possible, in their original containers. Plot holders must be aware of those substances, when stored in close proximity to or mixed with other substance can be explosive or give off noxious fumes.

These materials must not be stored in bulk quantities, but only in the amounts needed to carry out tasks.

Such items should be checked regularly that they are in a safe condition and if not should be removed from the site and disposed of safely.

Tenants are required to list any inflammables stored on their plots at the time of the annual rent collection.
